Blog #3 - Robotics + Arts

Technological advances continue to be made every single day whether we see it or not. Beginning from the Industrial Revolution in the 1700s to today and the days that come after, "humans are utilizing machines for the purpose of mass manufacturing," and so much more. (Ars Electronica) Today however, art is a critical asset in building emotional structure in order for us to proceed into future technological advancements.

According to Walter Benjamin, even perfect reproduction of works of art lack its unique existence at the proper time and place. However, technology has changed drastically since then, and new technology has its righteous existence and benefits. Robots play a large role in the elevation of technology. Today, we can see robots doing simple yet beneficial tasks almost everywhere. For example, if we take a look at the Opportunity Mars Rover, a rover that explored Mars for over fourteen years before it fell silent after a global dust storm roamed Mars in June 2018. This machine that was intended to last 90 days was able to able to help NASA find great scientific findings that even "confirmed the presence of standing water on Mars for long periods" according to Space.com. This shows that robots can help contribute to the art of nature and the world around us despite the distance.

In every day life, we can see robots being of service to humans. In certain restaurants, there are robots that are designed to retrieve your order and bring it to your dining table. Whether the robot is bringing a couple of drinks or even small appetizers, it is still fascinating that technology has become this advanced. At our very own Jamba Juice at Ackerman, there is a robot who prepares your orders instead of a regular human being. They even gave it a name: Mo Jamba!

All in all, we can see that machines can be designed for artistic expression that can function as both tools for art and exploring the "nature of interaction and human-machine interfaces." (Frontiers in Robotics and AI)
